5 Years and 1,000 Artists Later: How Spotify RADAR Supports Emerging Talent on the Path to Global Stardom

In 2020, Spotify launched RADAR with a clear mission: to identify, nurture, and amplify the next generation of global music talent. What began as a program for emerging artists soon expanded to include support for songwriters and creators, solidifying RADAR’s place as the global home for what’s next in sound. Through RADAR, Spotify bets confidently on new voices and provides resources and opportunities to help rising stars flourish.

Today, we’re excited to share a major milestone: RADAR has now supported more than 1,000 artists since launch.

This isn’t just a number; it’s a chance to celebrate the global impact RADAR artists have made and to reaffirm Spotify’s commitment to supporting them at every stage of their careers. RADAR artists benefit from on- and off-platform opportunities, including editorial support, exclusive content, and personalized marketing plans. Each region tailors its RADAR offerings to reflect local music culture and audience needs, ensuring artists receive support that resonates in their home countries and beyond.

With a presence in all 183 countries where Spotify operates, RADAR champions talent from every corner of the music world. We’re proud to provide a platform that connects artists with new fans and helps them build thriving careers.

Spotlighting RADAR artist journeys

Ambition, talent, and breakthrough moments have defined RADAR’s journey to 1,000 artists. Spanning genres, cultures, and continents, these artists are shaping the future of music, using RADAR as a launchpad for opportunity and growth.

Here are just a few examples of RADAR alums who are making their mark worldwide:

Peso Pluma: From regional star to global phenomenon

Peso Pluma

Peso Pluma was named a RADAR US artist in May 2023, just as Música Mexicana was exploding in the market. At the time, he was already making waves—holding the No. 4 spot on Spotify’s Top Artists globally, thanks in part to his hit single with Eslabon Armado, “Ella Baila Sola,” which had just climbed to the top of both our US and global charts. Within a month of joining RADAR, his monthly listeners jumped by 55%, with export streams up 154% and editorial streams up 116%. Now the most-streamed RADAR artist of all time, Peso Pluma’s journey shows how the program can help artists seize a cultural moment and reach new heights.

aespa: K-Pop redefined

aespa

Girl group aespa joined the RADAR Korea roster in November 2020, the same month they made their explosive debut with “Black Mamba.” Their debut single stormed the Billboard Global Chart (excluding the US) within three days, setting a new record for a K-Pop debut. RADAR helped supercharge their momentum: In just one month, aespa’s monthly listeners jumped by 1,433%, with export streams up 2,389% and editorial streams up an incredible 14,132%. Fast-forward to 2025, and aespa now boasts more than 10 million monthly listeners. Their success highlights how RADAR can help turn a breakout debut into lasting impact.

Rachel Chinouriri: Indie-pop on the rise

Rachel Chinouriri

Since joining RADAR UK & Ireland over a year ago, indie-pop artist Rachel Chinouriri has seen her streams jump 155%, her followers rise by 95%, and her monthly listeners climb from 1.4 million to 4.3 million. Her active audience doubled, showing a real boost in loyal fans. During her first year, she recorded two Spotify Singles, picked up two BRIT Award nominations, and sold out headline shows in New York and LA. Her story shows how RADAR can help artists grow their international audiences.

Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers: Aussie rock, amplified

Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers

Australian rock band Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers have journeyed through multiple Spotify programs, from Fresh Finds to GLOW to RADAR. Six months after joining RADAR, they saw a 224% increase in monthly listeners and a 54% rise in followers. They went on to win an ARIA for Breakthrough Artist and support Pearl Jam on tour in Australia and the US—with an upcoming performance at Austin City Limits in Texas slated for later this year.

As the band put it: “Being a RADAR artist brought us to so many new audiences. We’ve been able to go to America, go overseas, and seeing our faces on playlist covers is crazy—really incredible.”

Celebrate Five Years of Corridos Tumbados With Our New Spotify Single

Since the Mexican Revolution at the beginning of the 20th century, one particular style of music has served as a form of cultural storytelling for the Mexican people: the corrido. And while its popularity has endured, those accordion-laced ballads have evolved as modern influences began taking the genre in new and interesting directions.

Today, corridos tumbados are one of the most popular sounds under the Música Mexicana umbrella. Fusing trap and hip-hop with the traditional sounds of a corrido, a new wave of artists that includes Natanael Cano, Peso Pluma, Junior H, Fuerza Regida, and Eslabon Armado has been topping the global charts. And it was Natanael himself who gave the subgenre its name five years ago this month with the release of his album Corridos Tumbados under the Rancho Humilde record label.

“Corridos tumbados have transformed the vision of Mexican music and have connected with an unexpected audience globally. We had this idea since 2009, when we started Rancho Humilde,” said Jimmy Humilde, founder of Rancho Humilde. “For those of us who grew up between Mexican and American culture, we wanted to create something of our own, something that represented our identity. Today, thanks to this music, the new Mexican American generations are recovering Spanish, and our culture is more alive than ever. It was my dream, along with JB [José Becerra] and Roque Venegas.”

To celebrate this milestone anniversary, we’re releasing a new Spotify Single from Belinda, Kevin AMF, and Neton Vega. The trio teamed up to record an original song titled “Ni Fiestas, Ni Flores.”

While inspired by the sonic hallmarks of the earliest corridos tumbados, the track still carries a modern flair that you’d expect from three rising stars. Pop star Belinda only recently ventured into the world of corridos tumbados with hits like “Cactus” and “300 Noches.” Kevin AMF, meanwhile, is a young singer-songwriter known for fusing corridos tumbados with electro and dembow sounds. Last but not least, Neton Vega has made a name for himself as a producer of the genre. Together, these three Mexican artists offer a sense of the rich evolution of this sound and its impact on the industry.

“I love this new generation of Mexican music because it’s a generation unafraid to say what it thinks and what it feels,” said Belinda. “With this Spotify Single, we’re celebrating five years of corridos tumbados and building the future of this genre that is making history around the world.”

The rise of corridos tumbados

“Corridos tumbados were born in Los Angeles among a group of young artists who sought to express their experiences without disconnecting from their Mexican roots,” said Gerardo Mora, Senior Editor, Spotify Mexico. “But the genre has evolved a lot—today, it has become the anthem of a whole generation and a symbol for a community that identifies with its sound and its message.”

Let’s take a look at some of our top insights from the past five years of corridos tumbados.

Spotify has been proud to support Música Mexicana and its many flavors, including corridos. On our platform, fans can find a number of variant-specific playlists to explore the multifaceted genre. And last year, we teamed up with Fuerza Regida, Los Tucanes De Tijuana, and Eden Muñoz to release “La Tierra del Corrido,” a Spotify Single celebrating three generations of corridos artists.

Take In the Many Flavors of Música Mexicana With Our Special Series of Spotify Singles

As one of the fastest-growing genres worldwide, Música Mexicana has emerged as an unstoppable cultural force in recent years. In fact, between 2018 and 2023, Música Mexicana streams on Spotify shot up by more than 440% globally, with artists like Peso Pluma, Natanael Cano, Fuerza Regida, and Grupo Frontera rising to the top of the charts. Younger fans are particularly captivated by the genre: Gen Z streams climbed nearly 60% over the last year.

And it’s not just a single sound that’s responsible for such a meteoric rise. The Música Mexicana umbrella encompasses a rich tapestry of styles and genres, including corridos, banda, norteño, sierreño, grupero, and mariachi. A number of Música Mexicana subgenres have experienced significant growth on Spotify, as new waves of artists put their stamp on long-established musical traditions.

To celebrate the diverse landscape of Mexican music, Spotify is launching “La Tierra de Música Mexicana,” a new campaign spotlighting three of today’s hottest subgenres: electro corridos, norteño sax, and sad sierreño. We’ll showcase these sounds with a series of Spotify Singles launching throughout the month of August, each representing a unique facet of Música Mexicana.

Electro corridos

Electro corridos are a modern take on corridos, a style of music steeped in history, tradition, and storytelling. This subgenre fuses the electronic sounds of dance and house music, as well as dembow and urban beats, with the lyrics and storytelling of a corrido.

Debuting August 7, the first of the three Spotify Singles is “LIV” by brothers Sebastian and Eugenio Esquivel and producer-DJ Deorro. The forthcoming release captures the essence of electro corridos, which have seen remarkable growth on Spotify in the past year. They’ve experienced a 644% rise in consumption in the U.S. and a 590% rise in consumption in Mexico.

Stream our Electro Corridos playlist to hear some of the best the genre has to offer.

Norteño sax

Up next, “Beso” by Los Primos del Este, which showcases the norteño sax sound, will drop on August 21. Norteño sax blends the traditions of northern Mexican music with the distinct melodies and sonic textures of the saxophone. On Spotify, consumption of norteño sax has grown by 39% in both the U.S. and Mexico over the past year.

Discover the genre’s hottest hits on our Norteño Sax playlist.

Sad sierreño

Last but not least, “Cielo Eterno,” the sad sierreño single by DannyLux and Jasiel Nuñez, will arrive on August 28. Sad sierreño is a Gen Z twist on sierreño, a style of Mexican folk music best known for nostalgic ballads performed with acoustic guitars. Infused with emotive and introspective songwriting, sad sierreño has seen a 48% increase in consumption in both the U.S. and Mexico over the past year on Spotify, with Gen Z accounting for more than 40% of the genre’s streams.

Dive into our Sad Sierreño playlist to hear tracks that’ll get you in your feels.

Spotify has been proud to support Música Mexicana’s rise into a global powerhouse. “La Tierra de Música Mexicana” follows last year’s “La Tierra del Corrido” campaign, which included a special showcase featuring performances from top artists like Chino Pacas and Esteban Gabriel. We also celebrated “La Tierra de Texas” earlier this year, bringing live Música Mexicana performances to the iconic Houston Rodeo.

Head over to our Música Mexicana hub to explore the genre in all its glory, with everything from new releases to classic favorites.

Artists Can Now Start Countdown Pages To Promote Their Upcoming Albums

Building anticipation ahead of a new album release is one of the most important ways for artists to ensure its success. But in today’s music landscape, gaining prerelease momentum across multiple platforms that are often disconnected from where streaming actually happens is exhausting and inefficient. That’s where we come in. Spotify for Artists arms you with powerful tools to unleash your release’s full potential, reach a global audience, and deepen connections with fans before your music is released.

After having tested Countdown Pages with a select group of artists over the last year, we’re excited to announce that starting today, we’re expanding this feature to all eligible artists.

Countdown Pages is the ultimate prerelease destination where fans can presave an artist’s upcoming album, preview the track list, watch Clips, purchase merch, and see the timer count down to the release moment—all on Spotify. All artists with at least 5,000 active listeners in the 28 last days will now be able to create their own Countdown Pages to build hype for an upcoming album and ultimately drive streams once the album is released.

Listeners can find Countdown Pages across the Spotify app, including in the artist profile, Now Playing view, Search, and Home. Plus, once an artist’s new album drops, Spotify sends a push notification to all presavers and adds it straight to their libraries.

“The lead-up to an album’s release is arguably the most important time during a project’s life cycle. With this in mind, we took a step back as a company to come up with ways that we can help artists build momentum with fans during this period and elevate the album as an artistic statement,” said Sam Duboff, Global Head of Spotify for Artists, Marketing & Policy at Spotify. “The prerelease moment can often be disjointed across many different platforms; through the powerful tools offered in Spotify for Artists and our upcoming expansion of Countdown Pages to hundreds of thousands of artists, Spotify is focused on becoming the best home for artists and labels to release and promote their new music.”

Artists like Taylor Swift, Anitta, KAYTRANADA, Billie Eilish, Peso Pluma, Dua Lipa, Khruangbin, Charli xcx, Maggie Rogers, Whethan, Clairo, John Summit, and hundreds of others have already used Countdown Pages—in fact, earlier this year, Taylor Swift’s THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT became the most presaved album Countdown Page in Spotify history! We’ve seen impactful results for artists and their teams that include multiple benefits . . .

Fans are presaving albums

More than 80% of Spotify presaves happen the week an album is announced and during the week leading up to its release. This is also when we typically see strong social promotion from artists’ sharing their Countdown Pages with fans directly. For example, pop superstar Meghan Trainor uploaded a snippet of the “To the Moon” music video to her Countdown Page before sharing on social media, which helped drive additional presaves.

“Adding Clips to my Countdown Page has been a game changer,” Meghan said. “It gave me the chance to promote my single ‘To the Moon’ and provided fans a look into the creative world of my album Timeless ahead of its release. It’s like a hub for my album to make everything so much more convenient!”

Presaving leads to increased streams

On average, nearly 70% of users who presave an album stream it in the week following its release. And with the ability to reveal additional details about their upcoming albums, artists like country star Conner Smith have used Countdown Pages to keep fans engaged as release day nears.

“One thing I love about the Countdown Page on Spotify is being able to tease your track list,” Conner said. “Fans see what they’re going to get with the record. The Countdown Page just kind of puts it all in one place and makes it simple for fans to kind of see and understand.”

Clips help drive engagement

In a study of more than 500 artists with Countdown Pages, artists who uploaded Clips to their Countdown Pages averaged twice as many presaves as artists who didn’t.

“We used Clips to share studio footage of us recording the album and the album trailer video, which helped drive presaves on the Countdown Page and excitement for the record,” alt rock band Wallows said.

With the expansion of Countdown Pages, Spotify continues to invest in new tools designed to amplify the release moment and give each release its best chance at breaking through while helping artists build their fan bases on Spotify.

For artists who want to use features like Countdown Pages, Clips, Canvas, Campaign Kit, and more to promote their new music, Spotify for Artists’ recently launched New Release Guide offers a comprehensive resource that will guide them on their journeys.

Peso Pluma’s New Album Reveals ‘The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly’

Peso Pluma—aka “La Doble P”—is one of the fastest-growing Latin artists in Spotify’s history and the first to go from 2 million monthly listeners to 50 million in under a year. As Música Mexicana’s popularity continues to soar, the singer, rapper, and songwriter is leading the way with more than 14 billion streams on Spotify . . . and counting.

Peso’s 2023 album, GÉNESIS, was the most-streamed album in Mexico and ninth-most-streamed worldwide on Spotify last year. And his new album, ÉXODO—featuring collaborations with the likes of Junior H, Eslabon Armado, DJ Snake, Cardi B, Arcángel, Rich The Kid, and Anitta—is poised to follow suit.

For the Record caught up with Peso to talk about the new album, growing as an artist, and bringing Musica Mexicana to more listeners.

Your new album, ÉXODO, has just been released. How is it different from GÉNESIS?

You’ll get to see a whole different side of me on ÉXODO. It was made in many stages and phases of my life and career. It’s all in there, the good, the bad, and the ugly. It’s a really raw side of me.

You’re officially the Mexican artist with the most Spotify streams ever. How does that make you feel?

Wow—what an honor! It feels amazing! Spotify has supported my project from day one and put their faith in what we were doing. We are all so grateful that this project has been so well received, and this motivates me even more to keep going, keep breaking records and finding ways to evolve my music, because my fans deserve the best.

How has working with Spotify helped you build a stronger connection with your fans?

Because Spotify is global, we have the opportunity to get discovered around the globe as well. Música Mexicana is now known in places where we never thought they would listen to us.

What advice do you have for other artists who are building their careers?

Never give up, don’t let people detour you from your dreams, and keep working until you achieve your goals.

Música Mexicana Isn’t Just a Phenomenon in Mexico and the U.S.—It’s Taking Over Latin America.

As one of the fastest-growing sounds worldwide, Música Mexicana is more than just a genre. It’s an essential part of Mexican culture, encompassing its history, traditions, and values.

Take the corrido, for example—a traditional form of song born from Mexico’s revolutionary times, and one of Música Mexicana’s most prominent styles. Corridos tell the stories of both real and fictional characters, inviting the audience to immerse themselves in heroic lyrics that convey past and present experiences.

But the genre’s impact isn’t limited to Mexico. Instead, it resonates with fans from different countries and cultures. And thanks to social media—as well as the global Spotify charts—Música Mexicana has seen a sharp uptick in popularity. Between 2018 and 2023, Música Mexicana streams on Spotify grew by more than 440% globally, and last year alone, streams rose by 55%. Additionally, Gen Z streams of Música Mexicana have grown by nearly 60% on Spotify over the last year.

Música Mexicana’s influence has especially grown throughout Latin America, where streams have increased by more than 195% between 2020 and 2023.

Last year, Grupo Frontera collaborated with Bad Bunny on “un100xto,” which became the most-streamed Música Mexicana song in a single day, as well as the group’s biggest hit to date. And just this month, Natanael Cano appeared on Bizarrap’s “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 59.”

Made in Mexico, big in Colombia

In Colombia, where Mexican culture has also left its mark on film, television, and food, Música Mexicana has developed a life of its own, with Spotify streams surging by 445% between 2020 and 2023. The instruments, melodies, and lyrics of the genre have greatly influenced the current generation of Colombian music and in turn spawned a number of collaborations between Mexican and Colombian artists, beginning with Christian Nodal and Piso 21’s “Pa’ Olvidarme De Ella.”

Most notably, Peso Pluma appeared on Karol G’s “QLONA” and invited Blessd to hop on “LAS MORRAS,” while Carin Leon teamed up with Maluma on “Según Quién” and Piso 21 on “Que Triste.” Perhaps not coincidentally, both artists stand as the top two Música Mexicana artists when it comes to Spotify streams in Colombia.

These collaborations have enhanced the visibility of the genre in Colombia, resulting in a greater number of Colombian listeners’ embracing Música Mexicana artists and songs.

Scratching the surface

Música Mexicana may be enjoying its moment in the Colombian sun, but all signs indicate that the genre is just heating up abroad. For touring Música Mexicana artists, Colombia has emerged as a must-stop destination, with Carin Leon performing there for the first time in 2023; Grupo Frontera took the stage at the Estéreo Picnic Festival in Bogotá earlier this year.

While Música Mexicana’s stars have found a wealth of success in Colombia, Colombian artists are making waves in Mexico as well: Colombian singer-songwriter Camilo—who has collaborated with the likes of Grupo Firme on “Alaska,” Carin Leon on “Una Vida Pasada,” and Christian Nodal on “La Mitad”—receives more streams from fans in Mexico City than anywhere else in the world.

Spotify has been proud to support Música Mexicana and its rise into a global powerhouse. As its artists continue to expand its reach across Latin America, Colombia, and beyond, we’ll be there to support them.

On February 26, 1995, Selena walked into the middle of the Astrodome as the headlining act for the Houston Rodeo’s Go Tejano Day and delivered a performance that would help solidify her status as a musical legend. And nearly 30 years later, not only have her fans streamed her songs more than 2 billion times on Spotify, but they’re still talking about that iconic performance.

Just as Selena was more than a singer, the Houston Rodeo is more than an annual event for many Texans—they are both institutions beloved across generations. And as millions of people enjoy this year’s three-week celebration of all things cowboy, Spotify is helping music take center stage at the rodeo once again with La Tierra de Texas. With live musical performances including Ivan Cornejo and Los Tigres del Norte, Música Mexicana was ever present in 2024’s Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

On March 10 during this year’s Go Tejano Day—one of the biggest highlights on the Houston Rodeo calendar—we’re paying homage to Tejano culture’s impact on Música Mexicana and celebrating the genre’s evolution, from Selena to Peso Pluma.

Over the past year, Música Mexicana streams on Spotify have grown by 47% globally as the genre has quickly become one of Spotify’s most popular. In 2023, luminaries Peso Pluma, Junior H, Natanael Cano, Fuerza Regida, and Grupo Frontera not only propelled the genre forward and helped redefine what it could be, but they all also finished the year among Spotify’s Top 50 global artists. Moreover, many struck gold with hit collaborations inside and outside Musica Mexicana, including Ella Baila Sola” by Eslabon Armado and Peso Pluma, “un x100to” by Grupo Frontera and Bad Bunny, and Peso Pluma: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 55” by Bizarrap and Peso Pluma, all of which topped the Spotify global charts.

At the same time, Selena has shown that Música Mexicana’s global appeal isn’t just about new hits; fans love the classics too. To date, Selena’s songs have been streamed more than 2 billion times on Spotify, with more than 1 billion of those coming from her breakout album, Amor Prohibido, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this month.

But her popularity only continues to grow on Spotify. Over the past five years, Selena’s streams have increased by 227% globally.

A big reason for this is that Gen Z listeners stream Selena on Spotify roughly as much as millennials do. In fact…

  • More than 15 million Gen Z listeners streamed at least one Selena song in 2023.
  • Each week for the past year, Gen Z listeners streamed Selena songs more than 3.5 million times.

And of course, Gen Z loves current Música Mexicana as well…

  • In 2023, more than 83 million Gen Zs listened to at least one Música Mexicana song on Spotify.
  • Over the past year, Gen Z Música Mexicana fan streamed an average of nine songs per day on Spotify.

As Música Mexicana has evolved, Tejano culture continues to influence the genre. Spotify is committed to recognizing those contributions through moments like the Houston Rodeo and last year’s special La Tierra del Corrido showcase, which featured performances from top artists including Chino Pacas, Esteban Gabriel, Xavi, Grupo Marca Registrada, and Luis R Conriquez

A lo largo del año, estos podcasts, así como muchos otros, destacaron los principales momentos de la cultura pop, desde la música hasta las películas y la tecnología.
