Celebrating 10 Years of Spotify’s Viva Latino Playlist and the Global Rise of Latin Music

A decade ago, Latin music made up just 8% of global Spotify streams. Today, it accounts for more than a quarter (27%) of all listening worldwide—a testament to the artists and fans who have fueled its unstoppable rise.

Now celebrating its 10th anniversary, Viva Latino, Spotify’s flagship Latin music playlist, has been at the center of this evolution. Launched in 2015 as one of the first major Latin music playlists on a streaming platform, Viva Latino has helped connect listeners to new voices, genre-defining anthems, and the next wave of global superstars. In that time, global Latin music streams have grown by over 2,500% on Spotify, representing an increase of more than 587 billion streams.

At its heart, Viva Latino is about celebrating the artists who are defining the sound of a generation and the fans who make every song a movement. Spotify’s music editors curate the playlist to spotlight rising stars, honor established icons, and capture the moments that matter most to the Latin music community. More than just a playlist, Viva Latino has been a bridge, exporting identity, sounds, and culture to the world.

“Viva Latino’s influence on the global Latin music landscape over the last decade is unmatched,” said Antonio Vazquez, Head of US Latin Editorial, Spotify. “Over the years, the playlist has become one of the most recognized destinations for Latin music and a synonym for Latin hits. It has opened doors and served as a catalyst for the success of so many Latin artists who are now global superstars, and we couldn’t be more proud to have created those connections and helped tell their stories. Viva Latino is in constant evolution, and I can’t wait to see what the next 10 years will bring.”

Spotlighting breakthroughs and cultural shifts

Viva Latino has played a key role in surfacing hits before they topped the charts. For instance, Anitta’s “Envolver” appeared on the playlist 132 days before hitting No. 1 globally; Myke Towers’ “LALA” 99 days before; and Xavi’s “La Diabla” 29 days before. For artists like KAROL G and Rauw Alejandro, early playlist support helped introduce their music to new audiences and set the stage for global stardom.

As Latin music has evolved, so has Viva Latino, reflecting the rise of corridos tumbados, Música Mexicana, and other genres now making waves worldwide.

A decade of impact

Viva Latino has helped redefine the reach of Latin music. Here are just a few highlights from its first decade:

    • Viva Latino is now one of Spotify’s top five playlists globally.
    • Listeners have streamed the playlist for more than 595 million hours since 2017.
    • La Bachata” by Manuel Turizo holds the record for the longest run on Viva Latino (33 months), followed by:
    • “Hey Mor” by Feid and Ozuna is the most-streamed song in Viva Latino history.
    • Beéle’s breakthrough: Within a month of his Viva Latino debut in 2019, Beéle’s streams surged by 168%.

A platform for artists, a community for fans

As Viva Latino turns 10, we’re celebrating the talented artists and passionate fans who have made the playlist a global destination, and we’re looking ahead to even more discoveries, anthems, and milestones.

Hit play below and join us in celebrating a decade of Viva Latino.

Destacando avances y cambios culturales

Motivational Corridos: The New Sound of Resilience in Música Mexicana

Corridos have been a cornerstone of Música Mexicana for generations, telling stories rooted in everyday life. Now, a new chapter is taking shape: motivational corridos, or corridos motivadores. Drawing on themes of resilience and ambition, these songs are resonating with younger fans, offering both comfort and motivation.

Unlike other modern corrido styles, such as tumbados, motivational corridos focus on hard work, progress, and optimism. They center everyday people and their aspirations, often sticking to traditional song structures and the signature sounds of northern Mexican music, while also making subtle updates that speak to a new generation of listeners.

“What sets motivational corridos apart is how they use language to inspire and reimagine the traditional corrido narrative through a more emotional lens,” says Alejandro Grageda, Head of Music at Spotify Mexico. “These songs are connecting in a powerful way with listeners who want music that mirrors their own experiences.”

Voices of resilience

The artists driving the motivational corridos movement come from all corners of Mexico, each using the genre to capture what it means to keep going, no matter where you start.

Antonin Padilla, who once worked at a car wash, describes how corridos inspired him:

“When I was working at the car wash and dreaming of pursuing music full time, it was corridos from Grupo Marca Registrada that kept me grinding. Sometimes, it’s not even about the lyrics matching your life exactly—the motivational vibe just lifts you up and keeps you moving.”

Raúl Beltran has developed his own approach, which he calls metaphysical corridos:

“I created corridos metafísicos to carry motivation and encouragement in the lyrics, so people can believe in themselves and go after their goals. Life is built on what you think, what you say, and what you listen to.”

Grupo Selectivo finds inspiration in their own story of perseverance:

“Our motivational stories come from our own experiences. Grupo Selectivo is a group that started from the bottom—we’ve been chasing this dream for years.”

Kane Rodriguez sees firsthand how motivational corridos encourage listeners to strive for more:

“These self-improvement corridos come from seeing how people react to the music. When they feel motivated to earn more and keep working, that’s what inspires me to keep making these songs.”

For Los Chavalitos, authenticity is key:

“The stories in our corridos are our own. We write more than 90% of our music, and it’s all based on what we’re feeling and living through. We want people to know that life brings both sweet and bitter moments, and you have to enjoy them all—always valuing what you have and doing your best to move forward.”

Music that brings people together

Since 2023, Música Mexicana has shifted toward lyrics that are more introspective and resonant. As artists around the country began focusing on personal stories and messages of self-improvement, motivational corridos steadily grew—earning spots on Spotify playlists like La Reina: Éxitos de la Música Mexicana, Corridos Perrones, Ruteando, Rancho Viral, and MEXCLA. Now, with the launch of our new Corridos Motivadores playlist, these songs have a dedicated home.

This subgenre stands out for its authenticity, offering music that encourages, uplifts, and reflects real life. Motivational corridos are helping listeners find meaning in everyday challenges and creating a sense of belonging.

At Spotify, we’re proud to support the evolution of Música Mexicana, where pride, sensitivity, and the drive to move forward are louder than ever.

From Corridos Tumbados to Mexican Reggaetón, Experience the Wide-Ranging Sounds of Mexico at MEXCLA Spotify

On November 2 and 3, more than 27 artists will take the stage at MEXCLA Spotify: Palenque, Feria y Cotorreo. The event, hosted at Parque Bicentenario in Mexico City, brings fans, artists, and creators together to celebrate the sounds and styles of Música Mexicana. One of the strengths of the region’s music is its rich diversity—it’s no surprise to hear the beats of Mexican reggaetón alongside the reverberations of Mexican pop as you travel from shops to restaurants to live music venues throughout the country.

MEXCLA Spotify aims to reflect that musical diversity during one special weekend in a lineup comprised of 100% Mexican artists—from Música Mexicana, banda, norteño, and corridos tumbados to hip-hop, Mexican reggaeton, alternative pop, folk, and electronica.

Spotify listening trends informed this event. Last year, half of the 50 most-listened-to songs on Spotify Mexico were by Mexican artists, a huge jump forward from just five years ago, when that number was only 14%. Additionally, the streams from Mexican artists are increasing, with a whopping 100% year-over-year growth in Mexico since 2013. This music is traveling far beyond the geographical boundaries of the country, too. Since 2019, the collective streams of Mexican artists have more than tripled globally, soaring by more than 220%.

Here’s a taste of whom fans will see.

Música Mexicana

  • Grupo Firme helped grow Música Mexicana into a global phenomenon.
  • Luis R Conriquez is one of the most popular singers and composers of Música Mexicana, and a pioneer of corridos bélicos.
  • Grupo Marca Registrada stands out for its norteño and sierreño styles and has been evolving to incorporate hip-hop and electronic.
  • La Adictiva is a quintet hailing from Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, known for its norteño style.
  • El Padrinito Toys recently became one of the most-played corrido tumbados artists.

Mexican Reggaetón

Mexican Hip-Hop

  • RICH MAFÍA is composed of two artists who influenced the last decade of Mexican hip-hop: Alemán and Gera MX.

 Alternative Pop and Folk

  • Kevin Kaarl is a folk artist who has racked up streams in 180 countries.
  • Silvana Estrada won the Latin Grammy in 2022 for Best New Artist.
  • ALMAS is a female group with a K-Pop-inspired style.

Celebrate Five Years of Corridos Tumbados With Our New Spotify Single

Since the Mexican Revolution at the beginning of the 20th century, one particular style of music has served as a form of cultural storytelling for the Mexican people: the corrido. And while its popularity has endured, those accordion-laced ballads have evolved as modern influences began taking the genre in new and interesting directions.

Today, corridos tumbados are one of the most popular sounds under the Música Mexicana umbrella. Fusing trap and hip-hop with the traditional sounds of a corrido, a new wave of artists that includes Natanael Cano, Peso Pluma, Junior H, Fuerza Regida, and Eslabon Armado has been topping the global charts. And it was Natanael himself who gave the subgenre its name five years ago this month with the release of his album Corridos Tumbados under the Rancho Humilde record label.

“Corridos tumbados have transformed the vision of Mexican music and have connected with an unexpected audience globally. We had this idea since 2009, when we started Rancho Humilde,” said Jimmy Humilde, founder of Rancho Humilde. “For those of us who grew up between Mexican and American culture, we wanted to create something of our own, something that represented our identity. Today, thanks to this music, the new Mexican American generations are recovering Spanish, and our culture is more alive than ever. It was my dream, along with JB [José Becerra] and Roque Venegas.”

To celebrate this milestone anniversary, we’re releasing a new Spotify Single from Belinda, Kevin AMF, and Neton Vega. The trio teamed up to record an original song titled “Ni Fiestas, Ni Flores.”

While inspired by the sonic hallmarks of the earliest corridos tumbados, the track still carries a modern flair that you’d expect from three rising stars. Pop star Belinda only recently ventured into the world of corridos tumbados with hits like “Cactus” and “300 Noches.” Kevin AMF, meanwhile, is a young singer-songwriter known for fusing corridos tumbados with electro and dembow sounds. Last but not least, Neton Vega has made a name for himself as a producer of the genre. Together, these three Mexican artists offer a sense of the rich evolution of this sound and its impact on the industry.

“I love this new generation of Mexican music because it’s a generation unafraid to say what it thinks and what it feels,” said Belinda. “With this Spotify Single, we’re celebrating five years of corridos tumbados and building the future of this genre that is making history around the world.”

The rise of corridos tumbados

“Corridos tumbados were born in Los Angeles among a group of young artists who sought to express their experiences without disconnecting from their Mexican roots,” said Gerardo Mora, Senior Editor, Spotify Mexico. “But the genre has evolved a lot—today, it has become the anthem of a whole generation and a symbol for a community that identifies with its sound and its message.”

Let’s take a look at some of our top insights from the past five years of corridos tumbados.

Spotify has been proud to support Música Mexicana and its many flavors, including corridos. On our platform, fans can find a number of variant-specific playlists to explore the multifaceted genre. And last year, we teamed up with Fuerza Regida, Los Tucanes De Tijuana, and Eden Muñoz to release “La Tierra del Corrido,” a Spotify Single celebrating three generations of corridos artists.

Stream our Corridos Tumbados playlist to celebrate half a decade of the hit sound.

Take In the Many Flavors of Música Mexicana With Our Special Series of Spotify Singles

As one of the fastest-growing genres worldwide, Música Mexicana has emerged as an unstoppable cultural force in recent years. In fact, between 2018 and 2023, Música Mexicana streams on Spotify shot up by more than 440% globally, with artists like Peso Pluma, Natanael Cano, Fuerza Regida, and Grupo Frontera rising to the top of the charts. Younger fans are particularly captivated by the genre: Gen Z streams climbed nearly 60% over the last year.

And it’s not just a single sound that’s responsible for such a meteoric rise. The Música Mexicana umbrella encompasses a rich tapestry of styles and genres, including corridos, banda, norteño, sierreño, grupero, and mariachi. A number of Música Mexicana subgenres have experienced significant growth on Spotify, as new waves of artists put their stamp on long-established musical traditions.

To celebrate the diverse landscape of Mexican music, Spotify is launching “La Tierra de Música Mexicana,” a new campaign spotlighting three of today’s hottest subgenres: electro corridos, norteño sax, and sad sierreño. We’ll showcase these sounds with a series of Spotify Singles launching throughout the month of August, each representing a unique facet of Música Mexicana.

Electro corridos

Electro corridos are a modern take on corridos, a style of music steeped in history, tradition, and storytelling. This subgenre fuses the electronic sounds of dance and house music, as well as dembow and urban beats, with the lyrics and storytelling of a corrido.

Debuting August 7, the first of the three Spotify Singles is “LIV” by brothers Sebastian and Eugenio Esquivel and producer-DJ Deorro. The forthcoming release captures the essence of electro corridos, which have seen remarkable growth on Spotify in the past year. They’ve experienced a 644% rise in consumption in the U.S. and a 590% rise in consumption in Mexico.

Stream our Electro Corridos playlist to hear some of the best the genre has to offer.

Norteño sax

Up next, “Beso” by Los Primos del Este, which showcases the norteño sax sound, will drop on August 21. Norteño sax blends the traditions of northern Mexican music with the distinct melodies and sonic textures of the saxophone. On Spotify, consumption of norteño sax has grown by 39% in both the U.S. and Mexico over the past year.

Discover the genre’s hottest hits on our Norteño Sax playlist.

Sad sierreño

Last but not least, “Cielo Eterno,” the sad sierreño single by DannyLux and Jasiel Nuñez, will arrive on August 28. Sad sierreño is a Gen Z twist on sierreño, a style of Mexican folk music best known for nostalgic ballads performed with acoustic guitars. Infused with emotive and introspective songwriting, sad sierreño has seen a 48% increase in consumption in both the U.S. and Mexico over the past year on Spotify, with Gen Z accounting for more than 40% of the genre’s streams.

Spotify has been proud to support Música Mexicana’s rise into a global powerhouse. “La Tierra de Música Mexicana” follows last year’s “La Tierra del Corrido” campaign, which included a special showcase featuring performances from top artists like Chino Pacas and Esteban Gabriel. We also celebrated “La Tierra de Texas” earlier this year, bringing live Música Mexicana performances to the iconic Houston Rodeo.

Head over to our Música Mexicana hub to explore the genre in all its glory, with everything from new releases to classic favorites.

Peso Pluma’s New Album Reveals ‘The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly’

Peso Pluma—aka “La Doble P”—is one of the fastest-growing Latin artists in Spotify’s history and the first to go from 2 million monthly listeners to 50 million in under a year. As Música Mexicana’s popularity continues to soar, the singer, rapper, and songwriter is leading the way with more than 14 billion streams on Spotify . . . and counting.

Peso’s 2023 album, GÉNESIS, was the most-streamed album in Mexico and ninth-most-streamed worldwide on Spotify last year. And his new album, ÉXODO—featuring collaborations with the likes of Junior H, Eslabon Armado, DJ Snake, Cardi B, Arcángel, Rich The Kid, and Anitta—is poised to follow suit.

For the Record caught up with Peso to talk about the new album, growing as an artist, and bringing Musica Mexicana to more listeners.

Your new album, ÉXODO, has just been released. How is it different from GÉNESIS?

You’ll get to see a whole different side of me on ÉXODO. It was made in many stages and phases of my life and career. It’s all in there, the good, the bad, and the ugly. It’s a really raw side of me.

You’re officially the Mexican artist with the most Spotify streams ever. How does that make you feel?

Wow—what an honor! It feels amazing! Spotify has supported my project from day one and put their faith in what we were doing. We are all so grateful that this project has been so well received, and this motivates me even more to keep going, keep breaking records and finding ways to evolve my music, because my fans deserve the best.

How has working with Spotify helped you build a stronger connection with your fans?

Because Spotify is global, we have the opportunity to get discovered around the globe as well. Música Mexicana is now known in places where we never thought they would listen to us.

What advice do you have for other artists who are building their careers?

Never give up, don’t let people detour you from your dreams, and keep working until you achieve your goals.

12 Artists, 6 Countries, Endless Talent: Meet the RADAR Latin America Class of 2024

From reggaeton to Música Mexicana, Latin artists are reshaping the rhythm of global music. Recent years have seen the emergence of groundbreaking talent from cultural hot spots like Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Brazil, and Puerto Rico—and at their heels are more rising stars, ready to take the music to even greater heights.

Since 2020, Spotify has helped artists across the region chart their paths to stardom through RADAR, our global program to support emerging talent. Previous editions of the program have featured Latin hitmakers like Peso Pluma, Blessd, Ovy On The Drums, and Maria Becerra. Today, these power players arent just breaking records on Spotify—theyre breaking down barriers and bringing their music to a global audience.

Now we’re launching the RADAR Latin America class of 2024. Featuring 12 artists, the class represents Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, and Argentina. These artists reflect the region’s rich tapestry of styles and genres, including Argentine cuarteto, Música Mexicana, Brazilian funk, and reggaetón Mexa, as well as sounds like pop, hip-hop, rock, and R&B.

As part of the program, RADAR artists receive Spotify support through a dedicated playlist and special editorial placement. Additionally, this year, Spotify is teaming up with Meta to provide the class with personalized guidance, empowering them to create effective social strategies and enhance their online presence. This will be essential for expanding the artists’ reach and engagement on digital platforms.

Spotify is also partnering with the artist-fan community platform sesh to offer mentorship to each artist. Through sesh, which helps artists forge deeper connections with their listeners, they will build custom strategies for greater growth and retention of their fan bases.
