Spotify Introduces New Video Controls for Listeners

Spotify has always been about putting listeners in the driver’s seat. Today, people don’t just want more ways to spend their time; they want that time to be well spent. That’s why, from Taste Profile to Prompted Playlist, and the expansion of managed accounts to Smart Filters, we’re giving users more control over their listening experience. That belief, that time on Spotify should be intentional, personal, and rewarding, is at the core of how we build.

Spotify listeners agree, and that sense of control translates directly into value. According to a Burson survey of 8,400 respondents across 19 markets (August 27-October 3, 2025), 93% of Spotify users are excited about features that give them more control, and 92% say Spotify brings them closer to the things they love. For younger listeners, Edison Research finds that 86% of Gen Z listens to music or podcasts to help boost their mood. In a world of passive scrolling, Spotify offers something different: a more intentional experience that people can actively shape around what they love.

That’s why we’ve been hard at work on new video controls that let users better tailor their time on Spotify, either by choosing to maintain an audio-first experience or layer in a richer, video-enhanced one. Rolling out globally starting today, Family Plan managers will be able to switch video content on or off for any plan members through their subscription settings. This is something we already offer for Family Plan managed accounts for users under the age of 13 (or equivalent age in your country), and now any Family Plan member account will have video controls.

We’ll also be introducing new settings so all Premium and Basic users—whether on Individual, Duo, Family, or Student plans—and all users on our free service can control how video appears in their app. The settings update will begin rolling out to all users globally this month. This ensures that all listeners, from individuals to families, can shape an experience that feels right for them.

To access the video controls, go to Settings > Content and display, where you can easily switch Canvas looping visuals or videos for music or podcasts on or off. Once you’ve chosen your preferences, they’ll apply on mobile, desktop, web, TV, or wherever you use Spotify. Users will still see video ads, as well as Canvas-like visuals on some audio ads. Whether you want a visual experience or an audio one, Spotify adapts to you.

Listeners can now choose exactly how they want to engage with the videos that amplify music, podcasts, and audiobooks on Spotify. Control changes everything. Time stops feeling wasted and starts feeling owned. We’ve got more great features in the works, so Spotify remains a place where people love to spend time discovering their new favorite artist, creator, or author. In the meantime, you can listen to or watch our Co-CEO Gustav Söderström share more about how and why we build intentionally.

Spotify Expands Managed Accounts for Young Listeners on Premium Family Plans

Spotify is committed to bringing the best listening experience to all our users, and that includes parents and families. That’s why we’re expanding managed accounts—our Premium music account for young listeners—into seven new markets. Launching in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, and Netherlands, managed accounts are a way for Premium Family plan managers to give young listeners (under 13 or market equivalent) their own space to explore music, with parents and guardians still in control.

This expansion follows successful pilots in 10 markets: New Zealand, Sweden, Denmark, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, and Colombia. Available exclusively as part of a Premium Family plan, managed accounts offer additional value to plan managers by providing a music listening experience designed for younger listeners to create playlists, receive Spotify’s personalized recommendations, and enjoy features that Spotify users know and love, like daylist and Discover Weekly.

Each managed account comes with its own experience, so it’s a much-requested win for parents, who won’t have to worry about their Wrapped results getting hijacked. And for young listeners, it means their favorites stay their own, too.

At Spotify, we want to give parents and kids the ability to explore music together, from introducing children to the same songs you loved at their age, to helping guide their individual discovery. Every child is different, and every family’s journey is unique, so we’ve been evolving our tools to help caregivers share music in a way that feels right for them.

Managed accounts provide a music-only listening experience that Family Plan managers can control via their settings in several ways. These currently include:

    • the Explicit Content Filter,
    • the ability to control and restrict the playback of specific artists and songs, and
    • a toggle to hide video and Canvas (short looping videos accompanying songs).

Interactivity features are also limited on managed accounts, with no access to age-gated features like Messages.

For more tips on how parents and guardians can support and shape their children’s listening journeys, check out the Spotify Parental Guide.

To set up the managed account, Family Plan owners can head to their account pages in the app, select “Add a Member,” and then select the option to “Add a listener aged under 13 (or local market equivalent),” then follow further instructions. Learn more here.

Spotify Pilots New Music Experience for Young Listeners on Family Plans

Spotify is committed to bringing the best listening experience to all our users, and that includes parents and families. That’s why we’ve introduced a pilot for a Premium music account for young listeners under the age of 13 (or local market equivalent). The managed account pilot will be available exclusively as part of our Premium Family plan in Denmark, New Zealand, and Sweden.

As young listeners embark on a journey of music exploration with a managed account, through this new pilot they will get to enjoy many of the features and functionality that Spotify users know and love, including personalization features that make music discovery on Spotify so exciting and unique.

For parents and guardians, managed accounts enable them to better tailor the content that is available to young listeners via in-app controls—like managing the playback of Canvas, videos, and content labeled as explicit. They will now also be able to decide whether a young listener can play certain artists or tracks with Spotify’s new control feature.

The managed account is also welcome news for parents and guardians who do not want their recommendations getting mixed up with the latest tween tunes—each account under the plan will have separate recommendations, and a young listener’s musical favorites won’t feed into the plan manager’s annual Wrapped results.

Parents or guardians with a Family plan in Denmark, New Zealand, and Sweden can head to their account page in the app and select the option to “Add a listener aged under 13 [or local market equivalent],” then follow the instructions.

For Premium Family plan subscribers who prefer an already curated, kid-friendly listening experience for younger listeners, the Spotify Kids app is also available in Denmark, New Zealand, Sweden, and 11 other markets.

Both the managed account and Spotify Kids app offer an experience designed for listeners under the age of 13 (or local market equivalent), so it is important for parents or guardians to represent a young listener’s age accurately during account creation.

*Update as of July 16th, 2025: The pilot is also available to Premium Family subscribers in Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and Colombia.

*Update as of March 13th, 2025: The pilot is also available to Premium Family subscribers in Italy, Spain and Portugal.
