7 Ways Spotify’s New User Controls Put You in Charge of Your Listening

Your listening habits are as unique as you are—and this year, Spotify has introduced a wave of new features to help you personalize your experience. From playlist sorting and recommendation fine-tuning to voice-powered DJ sessions and new ways to switch up your Discover Weekly, it’s never been easier to play exactly what you’re in the mood for.

Here are seven new controls to try right now:

Explore Your Library with Smart Filters

Smart Filters in Your Library let you instantly sort your saved content by activity, mood, or genre. Here’s how it works:

    • Tap the filter icon in the top left of Your Library.
    • The Smart Filters menu will appear with options tailored to your saved content, organized by activity, mood, or genre.
    • Select a filter, and Your Library will update to match your choice.

Whether you’re queuing up a playlist for a run, searching for a podcast to unwind to, or picking an audiobook for your road trip, Smart Filters make exploring Your Library effortless.

Smart Filters are rolling out now and will be available for Premium users in the coming weeks on mobile and tablet devices in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, the UK, and the US.

Hide songs you don’t want to hear

Not feeling the vibe of a certain track? Tap the three dots at the top of the Now Playing view and select “Hide in this playlist” to skip it next time.

Snooze tracks for 30 days

Need a break from a song you usually love? The new Snooze feature, available for Premium users, lets you pause tracks from appearing in your recommendations for 30 days.

Refresh your Discover Weekly with genres

Discover Weekly is now more customizable than ever. Tap personalized genre buttons like pop, funk, or R&B at the top of the playlist to get a fresh 30-track mix based on your listening history. Whether you want to switch it up or stick with what you love, your playlist will instantly adapt to help you discover new favorites.

Take control of your queue

Premium users can enjoy a redesigned queue with upgraded controls that make it easier to shuffle, Smart Shuffle, repeat, or add a Sleep Timer. Once your queue ends, you’ll see Spotify recommendations you can keep or skip. Want full control? You can switch off Autoplay and Smart Shuffle in your settings.

Customize your playlist experience

For those looking to make playlists their own, we’ve upgraded the tools so you can easily Add, Sort, and Edit tracks to build your perfect sequence. It’s also easier to change your playlist title and create custom cover art to match the vibe. In select markets, you can generate new playlists from your Liked Songs by filtering them by genre or mood.

Talk to your DJ

Premium users can now ask DJ for a request by using their voices. Just tap and hold the DJ button and ask for any mood, genre, or vibe you want to hear. DJ will update your session, helping you uncover new tracks and reconnect with old favorites.

Wherever you listen, these new controls put you in charge of your experience. Head to Spotify now to customize your next listening session.

4 Reasons Why You Should Keep Your Spotify App Up-to-Date

a graphic design of a hand holding a phone with the spotify logo on it. Arrows circle around the hand.

We’ve all been there before. You download an app, use it daily, but never think to check if it needs to be updated. Maybe you hear buzzing from those around you about a new feature that you just can’t seem to find.

At Spotify, we’re continuously working to provide the best experience for you, and that means pushing app updates that improve your listening journey. And if your app doesn’t have automatic updates, or you don’t check that it’s up-to-date regularly, it’s possible you could miss out.

Here are four reasons why you should make updating Spotify part of your regular routine.

1. Access to the newest features

We’re constantly dropping new features on the Spotify app to enhance your experience. Now, you can listen along with your friends with Jam, you can receive a personalized playlist that changes with your day with daylist, and Premium users can hear from their very own AI DJ just by pushing play. If your app isn’t updated, you may miss out on the fun.

2. Keep up with the latest tech

From Tinder and Instagram to BeReal, Spotify has dozens of integrations across some of your other favorite apps. To make the most of these partnerships and link up your Spotify account, both apps need to be updated to the latest versions.

3. Bug fix

We’re always improving the mobile experience, fixing bugs, and troubleshooting glitches—keeping your app up-to-date is the best way to make sure your streaming experiences run smoother than our Smooth Jazz playlist.

4. Get ready for Spotify Wrapped

Last, but certainly not least, an updated app keeps you ready for Wrapped. When the time comes for the big reveal, instead of refreshing your app at the eleventh hour, you can get right into the Wrapped experience by making sure your app is always up-to-date.

Have we convinced you yet? If you’re not running on the latest app, check out this page for more info on how to update it.

How To Make Spotify’s Sleep Timer Part of Any Bedtime Routine

Listening to music or podcasts before bed is a great way to wind down after a long day. But not everyone wants to wake up in the middle of the night to the sounds of a hype pop track from their Discover Weekly playlist. That’s why Spotify has a built-in Sleep Timer, which helps you ease into a peaceful sleep by allowing you to decide how long your music or podcast episode plays before it automatically stops.

For those across mobile devices who want to give the Sleep Timer a try, we have a few tips on how to use this handy feature:

  1. To find the Sleep Timer, tap the Now Playing bar to bring up the full Now Playing screen.
  2. While listening to podcasts, you can access the Sleep Timer directly on the Now Playing view by tapping the moon icon to the right of the play button. For music, tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner and scroll to the bottom of the menu where you can tap on the Sleep Timer option.
  3. Select how long you want your tunes to play. You can choose to have the music go for 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 45 minutes, 1 hour, or until the end of the track.
  4. An on-screen notification will say “OK, your sleep timer is set.”
  5. If you want to check how much time you have left on your Sleep Timer, just tap the three-dot menu, then scroll down and you’ll see the time alongside the Sleep Timer logo.

Once you’re all squared away with that, you’ll be loading up your favorite songs to help whisk you off to dreamland in no time. Sleep tight!

Looking for the right sounds to doze off to? Our Sleep playlist has everything you need to get a good night’s rest.

*Update as of August 29, 2025: Now, you can control your Sleep Timer across your mobile phone, desktop, and Wear OS smartwatch. With this update, you can set a timer on any of these surfaces and have it stop playback on nearly any device, including speakers, TVs, and game consoles. This makes it easier than ever to manage your listening sessions and ensures playback stops at your set time. Whether you want to leave your phone out of your room at night, or reduce the risk of utilizing your audiobook hours, our Sleep Timer has you covered.

K-Pop Fans Can Now Blend With Some of Their Favorite Groups on Spotify

K-Pop fans, Spotify has a listening experience that will let you connect with your favorite bands in a new way. Through Spotify’s Blend feature, you can sing and dance along to an all-new set of playlists that merge your personal music taste with that of some of the biggest names in K-Pop.

Blend was introduced last year as a new way for two Spotify users to combine their musical preferences into one shared playlist made just for them. Earlier this year, we announced updates that included the chance to Blend with some of your favorite artists.

Now Spotify is expanding the collection of Blend artists to include K-Pop superstars BTS, Stray Kids, ENHYPEN, TOMORROW X TOGETHER, NMIXX, and AB6IX. When you Blend with these artists, you’ll get a curated playlist that combines your favorite tracks with theirs. You’ll also receive a share card showing your taste-match scores and the songs that bring you two together. The cards can be shared directly to Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, or Twitter so you can show off your matches with other members of the ARMY, Stay, ENGENE, MOA, NSWER, and ABNEW fan bases.

Ready to see what these bands have been listening to lately? Grab your headphones and Blend by following the link for your favorite K-Pop artist below.
